Audi on top in first ever e-auto rally

Audi’s R8 e-tron beat 23 other electric cars to win the first ever Silvretta E-Auto Rally in Austria.

We’re delighted,” said Michael Dick, responsible for technical development on the Audi Board of Management.  “On a challenging route, we were able to show that we are well on the way to bringing electric drive to production with our R8-based e-tron demonstrator”.

While the Audi two-seater (a genuine quattro, with four motors – two on the front and two on the rear axle) took first place in the overall standings by more than half a second, the rally was not just about speed. The competitors also had to achieve specific targets in ten time trials.

The biggest challenge for the team was on the second day’s racing in the mountain and valley trials. In the fourth time trial, the R8 e-tron had to drive up the Silvretta High Alpine Road and handle an altitude difference of more than 3,000 feet over the mountain road’s 9.3 miles. Audi works driver Lucas Luhr nevertheless managed to finish third, and the team advanced to second place overall before clinching victory on the third and final daily stage.
