What to do in the event of an accident
-
Stop: Under the Road Traffic Act 1989 you must stop (long enough to exchange addresses) if any person or animal has been injured or if any person's property, road signs, street furniture, including other vehicles are damaged.
-
Stay Calm: Do not admit liability - if you do, your insurance company may refuse your claim. Try to avoid conversation about possible cause of the accident.
-
Warn other motorists: Avoid the risk of further accidents or injury by warning other road users of the hazards. If there are any injuries, do not move the injured party. Administer any first aid you can safely give (only certified first aiders) and summon help.
-
Record driver, any occupants and vehicle details: Make a note of any other drivers involved together with their vehicle details and their description.
-
Information to be provided: Be prepared to provide your name and address (and that of the vehicle owner if different) and vehicle registration number to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring the information.
-
Report accident: If you do not do this, the accident must be reported to the police within 24 hours, and your certificate of insurance produced with your driving licence at the nearest police station. Exchange insurance details within 7 days or report it to the police if you do not receive this information.
-
Record accident details: Record driver any occupants and the vehicle details, date, time and location of accident, traffic and weather conditions.
-
Record witness details: Take the names and details of any witnesses who saw the accident and where they were.
If there are any allegations of an offence, it must be reported to the police.
