Practical tips for the roadside – what to do in an accident
If you are unlucky enough to be involved in accident, keep the following ten-point plan in mind to ensure you stay safe, keep calm and accurately record key details of the incident:
-
Stop. Under the Road Traffic Act 1989 you must stop (long enough to exchange addresses) if any person or animal has been injured or if any property, road signs and/or street ‘furniture’ (including other vehicles), are damaged.
-
Stay Calm. Do not admit liability – if you do, your insurance company may refuse your claim. Try to avoid conversation about possible causes of the accident.
-
Warn other motorists. Avoid the risk of further accidents or injury by warning other road users of the hazards.
-
If there are any injuries, do not move the injured party. Administer any first aid you can safely give (but only if a certified first aider) and summon help.
-
Record driver, any occupants and vehicle details. Make a note of any other drivers involved, together with their vehicle details and description.
-
Be prepared to provide your name and address (and that of the vehicle owner if different) and vehicle registration number to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring the information.
-
Report accident: If you don’t, it must be reported to the police within 24 hours, and your certificate of insurance produced with driving licence at the nearest police station.
-
Exchange insurance details within seven days or contact the police if you don’t receive it.
-
Record accident details: Record driver, any occupants and vehicle details, date, time and location of accident, traffic and weather conditions.
-
Record witness details: Take the names and details of any witnesses who saw the accident and where they were.
If there are any allegations of an offence, this must be reported to the police.
