Audi Start-Stop New Fuel-Saving technology
Audis new start-stop system and a new efficiency program built into the onboard computer, helps Audi owners save fuel. The start-stop Audi system cuts engine power at idle when the clutch pedal is released and the gear lever is in its neutral position, and then restarts in just two-tenths of a second – more rapidly than any other comparable system – when the clutch is depressed. With the system’s help, economy is boosted and CO2 is reduced by approximately 5g/km, but if required it can be deactivated at the touch of a button.
The system is extremely quiet, convenient to operate and fast. It shuts down the engine when the car has come to a stop, for example in congestion or at traffic lights, and restarts when the clutch is activated. Typically, in normal driving conditions, it lowers fuel consumption by about 0.2 litres per 100 km, and reduces CO2 emissions by around 5g/km.
The on-board computer’s new efficiency program continuously analyses fuel consumption and gives the driver up-to-date tips for saving fuel, depending on the driving situation and driving style, via the central display. It signals to the driver whether the right gear is engaged or whether a shift would be more fuel-efficient. It also identifies the systems requiring extra energy – for example the air conditioning and seat heating – and indicates their share of fuel consumption. This information appears in the centre display.
The gearshift indicator signals to the driver when to change gear, for optimal fuel economy – a large, colour-coded display indicates whether the right gear is engaged, or whether shifting would be more efficient.
These two new innovations complement the energy recovery system, which saves fuel by feeding energy back into the vehicle’s electrical system during deceleration phases. It is already standard equipment on the A3 1.4 TFSI manual, A4, A5 Coupé and A5 Cabriolet with two-litre engine and manual transmission, the A6 and the Audi Q5 and Q7.
